ResourceSpotlight:
Jan Hunt's
The Natural
Child:
Parenting
From the Heart
Jan
Hunt, director of the The
Natural Child Project, makes a logically and emotionally
compelling case for attachment parenting and unschooling practices in
her book The Natural
Child: Parenting From the Heart. She offers practical
parenting advice from infancy to
school-age, outlining useful tools for empathic
parenting pared down often into
ten easy steps for parents to remember. The
Natural Child
is loaded with valuable wisdom on
respectfully nurturing children without punishment, helping children
learn without coercion and advocating for children on a broader scale.
I wish every mother-to-be could receive a copy of this thoughtful,
practical parenting guide!
Reader's Reviews:
I just want to say that this
is the book that got me here. Because of
Jan's website and beautiful book I found this place, and it has been a
beautiful and fulfilling journey. That was not because of Always
Unschooled being on
her website as the site of the month, but because her words led me to
start
researching Unschooling. I still have a lot to conquer, but I am on my
way to being the parent I want to be and living joyfully with my kids.
It is also my bedside table book and the one I give to new parents to
be.
When a couple of months ago I needed some help after my dd was born
and I came here and opened up my heart and got support and then I re-
read Jan's book and those steps were what got me back on the right
track again. Thank you all of you here and thank you Jan Hunt.

Fell in love with my baby and did all the AP stuff without knowing that
there was an entire
AP movement going on. (kind of was living under a rock at
first...lol) Um, then I stumbled onto The Natural Child Project when
dd1 was 8-9 months old. Alas—loads and LOADS of validation
for how
I was parenting, and even a name ("AP") to go with it! lol, looking
back at how surprised/relieved I was to not be the only one.
That website inspired me to get Jan Hunt's beautiful book and many
others from her book list soon made their way into my lap. Also, I
realized we actually had a local LLL and found lots
of other "AP"
moms in my area. And now, more recently, even a handful of (somewhat)
local unschooling mamas have popped up as well, which is so thrilling!
Thank you for sharing, Alex. It just warms my heart, hearing how Jan
Hunt helped yet another mom find the support she needs to continue her
journey in the direction she mindfully chooses. I have to say, while
I essentially unschooled myself in AP the first 8-9 months, I don't
think I could possibly
have unschooled myself into RU! Not without
stumbling onto Jan Hunt's site, lots of book reading, deschooling, and
benefiting from the words of other unschoolers. So, yes—I
definitely want to echo your thanks to Jan Hunt and to all who post
here [at AlwaysUnschooled], for continuing on with the excellent food
for thought.

I
think that Sears and Coloroso
are still good "bridge" works for people
moving in a culturally atypical direction. Some people will stop there,
which is unfortunate.
Yes, and obviously I managed to get "here," so...
I still prefer Jan Hunt's The Natural Child—it's
so gentle and
loving. I've decided that's my new baby gift book; I just love it. It
opens the door to unschooling without being an unschooling book, and it
has so much online support for further reading. That's my new "bridge"
book, but maybe I'm being too hopeful?
